Sculpting Modernity within Historical Layers

The Context & Heritage Originally constructed as an aristocratic residence during
the first Pahlavi era, this site underwent a significant transformation in 1953 (1332
Solar Hijri) to become one of the region’s most prestigious fine art schools. Over
decades, the building has served as a cradle for renowned artists, yet its physical
infrastructure eventually lagged behind modern educational needs. The challenge
was to introduce contemporary facilities—such as a black box theater, a standard
art gallery, and recreational spaces—without overshadowing the historical
significance of the original structure.

The Architectural Intervention Our design
strategy focused on a respectful yet
distinct dialogue between the old and the
new. To accommodate the extensive
program without overcrowding the site,
we utilized a “subterranean” approach,
excavating the courtyard to place largevolume functions like the gallery and
black box underground. Above ground, a
modern extension characterized by
exposed concrete and glass was
introduced. This new volume acts as a
minimalist backdrop, creating a deliberate
contrast that highlights the ornate details
of the historical mansion rather than
competing with them.

The Experience The result is a revitalized

educational campus where history and

modernity coexist seamlessly. The new

circulation diagrams reconnect

fragmented spaces, allowing students to

move fluidly between theoretical

classrooms in the heritage building and

practical workshops in the modern

extension. By activating the negative

space of the courtyard and introducing

high-standard artistic facilities, the project

not only preserves a cultural monument

but also redefines the standard for art

education environments in the region.
